Griffin Survivor iPhone 4 Case Review

The Griffin Survivor is part of Griffin's new Armored series of tough cases, which also includes the Explorer and Tracker cases, all three are compatible with the AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4. The Survivor is one tough case, it was tested and passed both US and UK military standards. The Griffin Survivor case protects your iPhone 4 from drops, shock, vibration, sand, dust, wind and rain.
Open Frame Touchscreen

The Survivor is a bulky case just as most ultra-protective cases are for the iPhone, it is designed to be bulky in order to provide the utmost protection for the brittle iPhone 4. The Survivor case is similar to the Otterbox defender case which are both designed with a hard, shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame, a very thick shock absorbing silicone and a built in screen protector. The Survivors outer silicone is much more durable and thicker than the Otterbox Defender which in my opinion would protect the iPhone 4 better if the phone should take a plunge to the floor.

Open Frame Touchscreen

The Survivors built in screen protector is anti-glare so there is no watermarking or rainbow effect on the screen, but it does make the Retina Display a little grainy, but nothing unbearable. The outer screen protector is smooth to the touch and easy to navigate and slide your finger around. However, the integrated screen protector reduced the sensitivity of the touchscreen more than the Otterbox Defender did in our tests. Another problem we ran into with the integrated screen protection was when we tested it with a white iPhone 4 with no screen protector installed, the integrated plastic film that covers the proximity sensor does NOT allow it to work properly. The screen stayed on during calls allowing the cheek to hit the mute and speaker buttons on the screen. In fact even when we were on a call, we covered the proximity sensor with a finger and the screen remained on. The only way we got around this problem was to either cut out a hole in the plastic over the proximity sensor or to remove the entire one piece plastic screen protection which we did and the proximity sensor then worked perfectly.

Now onto the buttons and access points. Because the Griffin Survivor is water resistant, all of the ports are covered and protected with the built in plugs that flip out when you need to access them. The home button, power/sleep and volume buttons all have great feedback and responds very well when pressed. The Camera flap on the other hand is annoying, you have to hold it out of the way while taking a photo or else it will fold over and block the view finder. In my opinion this needs to be redesigned with a way to leave the flap open while using the camera either with a snap or tuck feature.

Onto the belt clip. It seems as if Griffin focused all of their time with design of the case itself and skimped on the belt clip. The clip holds the case pretty good in normal situations, but if you are running, cycling or any other outdoor rugged activity I would not trust the clip to secure the iPhone. We tested the iPhone 4 in the Griffin Survivor when running and the iPhone worked its way out and fell to the ground. Of course the good thing is, the actual case is built like a tank so of course no damage occurred to the phone. In our opinion, the clip is in need for improvements and needs to reflect the durability of the case it is trying to secure.

The Griffin Survivor is by far the toughest case we have ever tested and possibly the most durable and toughest case on the market today for the iPhone 4. When your iPhone is secured in the Griffin Survivor you can rest assured it is well protected. The design of the Survivor case is awesome and has the look that the iPhone is wrapped in armor. The silicone is very tough and grainy so it is not a lint catcher if you choose to carry it in your pocket instead of using the included belt clip.

4) Carry your iPhone 4 with 100% confidence that it won't get damaged

Cons:

1) Camera flap is annoying
2) Proximity sensor issues with white iPhone 4 only
3) flimsy belt clip

The Griffin Survivor is highly recommended to those looking for a durable case to protect your iPhone 4. If you have the black iPhone 4, not using the belt clip and not taking a ton of pictures I think you will be totally satisfied with this case. This case gets an A++ for the protection it offers.

Quoting Khan, "The Samsung Galaxy S Model GT-I9000 and 'Smart Life' are giving users an experience that is integrated, immersive and intelligent."

Take your portable office on the road. "ThinkFree" and get your work done with handy note taking. Receive all your email, Bluetooth, WiFi and messages on the fly and open PDF and MS Office documents without conversion. Included are the basic mobile features like GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth.

The social media hub incorporates all of your Twitter, personal and business emails and places it on a single screen.

JK Shin, president and head of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications Business stated "Americans want to watch high quality video content on their phones just as they can on their TV or computer at home." He further stated "They want easy multitasking on their handset. They are demanding of services such as real-time traffic reports, 3D Maps and directions."

It sports a 5 MP 2592 x 1944 pixel camera featuring auto focus, touch focus, Geo-tagging and face & smile detection with a secondary VGA camera. Storage memory weighs in at 16GB / 8GB with an external memory slot up that can handle up to 32GB.

Much to the dismay of hard core techies, the Samsung Galaxy S doesn't support 4G at this time but there is always hope!

Window Cam Handles: Now You Know

Have you ever gone to the hardware store with a broken piece of something, knowing you're going to have to ask the hardware expert for "another one of these" because you have no idea what the name is? It's a very common practice. Items that are very common for the previous scene are Window Cam Handles. These handles are the twist and lock handles that many home windows have. Samsung Fascinate for Verizon Wireless is a CDMA version of Samsung Galaxy S. It supports dual band CDMA 800 / 1900 Mhz 2G networks and CDMA 2000 Mhz 1xEV-DO 3G networks. The phone measures 125 X 64 X 10.5 mm and weighs 116 grams. It offers stylish looks and is one of the most lightweight smartphones in the market.

Like most Samsung smartphones, this one also features a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. The Super AMOLED display is one of the best in the world and offers bright and clear pictures. The size of the screen is 4.0 inches and has a resolution of 480 X 800 pixels. It supports up to 16 millions colors and is made of Gorilla Glass material which is scratch resistant. The user interface of the phone is based on Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 which is refreshing and easy to use. An accelerometer sensor is provided which automatically changes the display mode to portrait or landscape depending on how you hold the phone. A proximity sensor automatically turns off the display when the phone is brought close to the body during calls. Other features include multi-touch input, touch-sensitive controls and much more.

Other features include geo-tagging, face detection, smile detection, etc. An LED flash is also offered which allows you to take high quality photos and video even during night or in low light conditions. However, the phone lacks a secondary camera for video conferencing.

The cell phone runs on a powerful ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor and features Google's open source Android operating system version 2.1 which can be upgraded to version 2.2. Users can download their favorite apps from the Android App store. Also, there are variety of application that are preloaded onto the phone. For entertainment, a MP3/WAV/eAAC+/AC3/FLAC music player and MP4/DivX/WMV/H.264/H.263 video player are provided. Stereo FM radio with RDS is also supported. Google services such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Gtalk, Picasa are directly integrated. Other applications include voice memo, image/video editor, digital compass, VZ Navigator, document editor, organizer, calculator, etc.

A superb blend of Super AMOLED screen technology and the impressive new operating system from Windows looks set to make the new Samsung Omnia 7 a hit with consumers everywhere.

The chassis of the handset measures 122.4 x 64.2 x 11mm, which is fairly standard within the realms of the smartphone market. Within this frame the phone sports a superb screen which is the real ace in the pack. At 4inches, the screen is larger than what is offered on most other models, and it boasts an outstanding 480 x 800 pixel resolution to back this size up. Thanks to this, and the 16 million colours on offer, image quality is practically unrivalled. The Super AMOLED technology that is used also aides visibility in sunlight, as well as shaving vital millimetres of the depth of the phone. This is achieved by the screen comprising of just one layer that comprises of both the screen and the touch sensitive panel, rather than them being two separate sheets as is found on more traditional displays. Looking around the actual handset you will find the top edge is where all of the connections are housed, so a 3.5mm headphone socket and a micro USB port are present. Although the screen and OS are the stand out features, there are enough other facilities on this phone to keep users everywhere happy.
